A Quick Note on Goodreads Reviews
Lately, I’ve noticed some questions floating around about how Goodreads handles negative reviews—especially from folks who may not have actually read the book. So here’s a quick, no-nonsense breakdown:
• Goodreads doesn’t require proof that someone has finished—or even started—a book to leave a rating or review.
• Yep, that means someone can leave a one-star review without reading it.
But there are rules.
Goodreads does not allow:
• Reviews that attack the author personally rather than focusing on the book
• Harassment, threats, or abusive language
• Fake or coordinated reviews meant to artificially tank (or boost) a book’s rating
• Reviews that are off-topic or clearly written in bad faith
If a review breaks these rules, it can be flagged and removed. Goodreads can also temporarily limit reviews on a title if there’s a spike in suspicious activity.
Bottom line:
Not every negative review is unfair—but malicious, abusive, or coordinated behavior is against Goodreads’ policies.
Honest discussion? Always welcome. Targeted harassment? Absolutely not.
Huge thanks to everyone who supports fair, thoughtful reviews—whether they’re glowing or critical.
